about

In the early stages of a relationship, it can feel like we have a new lease on life. We discover some part of ourselves newly reflecting in someone else and we get lit up with the prospect of what’s to come, fiery potential, unwavering anticipation. There’s an intoxicating notion that everything is changing for the better, a reminder that what we’ve always dreamed of is within reach, and there is no way we can return to the way things were.
“Rebel” is a tribute to stumbling into the next phase of life with something intact. I’ve done a lot of stumbling and beating myself up for it. I still do. I spent a long time overvaluing independence and have grown to know how much I love and need people. In a way, this song helps me remember breakthroughs on days I feel like I’m barely getting through. It reminds me to do new things and find comfort in being uncomfortable. In spite of everything, I’m recognizing that dreams feel closer to reality when you have someone help reach for them with you.

lyrics

I broke in the right bones
I cut all the right lines
I ain't foolin’ anyone
I can try just to get me in a rental
How did I get by not being your home?

I was a rebel then, now I just get along
I was a rebel then, now I just get along
Too many things going out the way I'm going
I was a rebel then, now I just get along

I put on the right face
I walk in the right shoes
I ain't losing anymore
I can't fly but you get me sentimental
Now that I can die without your love on loan

And I know I can’t go back the way it was
